(pictures from social media club/Awesome camp 2011 on facebook)A couple of friends of mine, Deb and Christy, are pretty savvy when it comes to social media. Among other things, they run a business together in which they help businesses "be more awesome online". They also began a chapter of Social Media Club in our town which hosted "Awesome Camp" this weekend.
Lately my life has been a whirlwind of homework, kids, and more homework. I have felt pretty cut off from the rest of the world--but have been too busy to worry much about it. Then, one day, Christy invited me to "Awesome camp". With a name like that, it was hard to refuse. (who cannot use a little awesome in their weekend?)
Friday night was a kick-off party with lots of networking/meeting and getting to know new people. Then, Saturday, there was a schedule of speakers pretty much all day long. Three speakers on a variety of topics (tech, creative, entrepreneur) about every 30 min filled the days schedule. With lunch and snacks in between.
The speakers were mostly made of the attendees that day. People coming to share info. about their passions or businesses. I had planned on just hanging out and listening to people...just take it all in....and hoped to learn lots of new stuff.
I ended up speaking twice. Twice!
I hardly even know how it happened. They needed some speaking slots filled.....I wanted to help my friends out....Christy knows me and suggested two things that I am passionate about. So, in the morning I spoke about green smoothies and shared samples. In the afternoon, I spoke about homeschooling in Nebraska.
It was totally low-key and the people there were kind and just interested in learning information about different things--just like me. So, it was like talking to a group of friends.
I ended up having a great time and meeting a lot of great people. Thanks to Deb, Christy, and everyone else who helped put that together. It was pretty.......Awesome:)!
