A school note

I have been thinking that I haven't blogged about our homeschool for a while. It is not just a part of our life, it is a lifestyle. I found that out when I had my children all in public school last year. It was a totally different lifestyle.

I have learned that our homeschool runs much more smoothly if we have a routine in place. However, in our family it also needs to be super-flexible. So I created a routine, but did not assign certain times of day to it. That way if we have a late night and get a late start in the morning, I don't need to freak out that our routine is ruined for the day.

Our routine looks something like this:

Family Time
Household jobs
School work
(take turns working with me, on their own, and the older ones each have a job helping the younger ones)
Lunch
School work
Quiet time (two hours of reading/quiet play/nap for the little ones--this is when I do MY school work)
Free time

That's it. Not too complicated--well, on paper anyway. "School work" can encompass so many different things that we do. I have the actual school work broken down for each child. I also try to do as much as possible with as many children as I can. For example, science and history are two subjects that we often do all together. Or, a Home Economics project of making our own pizzas!

A couple of things I love:

I love when the older children sit down and do reading or math work with the younger ones. So, cute to see them taking on the role of teacher!

I love sitting down with my children and teaching them one on one. It can be any subject. I just love that time with them and seeing them learn something new.

My top favorite has got to be teaching them to read!

I am so glad you commented on my blog! I have been wanting to pick your brain about homeschooling but now I can read about it. :) I really respect you and all you do with your family. I think you have great kids.
