Just thought I'd post a picture of my bike pedal--since I like to talk about them so much! Every pedal is different and works a slightly different way. For mine, my shoe has a cleat screwed onto the bottom that snaps into that hole you see in the pedal. Then, I am "clipped-in"--I think that's what they say, anyway.
To "clip-out", I have to push my heal outward--that snaps the cleat out of the pedal.
I was taught to clip one foot out when I am getting ready to stop, then when I break I can put that foot on the ground.
It's quite a rush to try to clip-out in the midst of falling to the ground!

Ah, I have been enlightened now. . .thank you!! And here's to no more dramatic clip-outs in the midst of falling!
Sounds like you need way more coordination and brains than I have to work that right. I will be very impressed if you can master that!
I don't think I like the idea of being clipped to the pedals. I would surely not survive...
