My oldest boys detassled this summer. That means getting up at 4:30am--buses leave for the fields at 5:30am. They typically drive 1-2 hours away from town, the kids get hot, sweaty, dirty, and tired walking up and down rows of corn, pulling the tassels off. The first day, the rows were 1 mile long! Big Bro. only made it three days and then had to quit because his other job had him working until 11-midnight (did I mention he got a job at a local delicious ice cream place?? Well, that happened too).
Anyhow, Middle Bro. stayed with it. He did great and worked hard! Since this was his 2nd year, he got to be a squad leader a few times. He also got a bonus for not missing a day and another bonus for being one of the top 5 detasslers on his bus! Proud of my boys!!
The season was crazy because they actually ended up working EVERY DAY for TWO WEEKS! It is unusual for it to be so intense, but it did make for bigger paychecks, so we can't complain!
Next, the boys got to go on a High Adventure for Boy Scouts. They didn't say it was "fun" exactly, but they had a good experience in the great outdoors! They hiked and fished and "roughed it" in the Colorado Mountains.
This was a crash site of some plane a long time ago. I am told the military blew the plan up and these were the remains.
I just got back from bringing big Sis to BYU-Idaho! My friend came with us and we had a "girls road trip"! We talked and laughed all 12 hours to Utah! We visited Temple Square and two fun shopping malls in Salt Lake City on Thursday. On Thursday night, we stayed with friends. Friday morning we got donuts, took Big Sis Grocery shopping, and moved her in her apartment.
I'm so excited for her! It helps that she is rooming with her best friend! She is a bit nervous, but I know she will do very well! Everyone on campus was so kind and helpful. At one point we were just standing by the road talking and someone asked if we needed help. That is just the kind of campus it is!
I am so happy that I had the experience of attending this college myself and it was amazing to see how much it has grown and changed (one of which is having a Temple!)!
We were shown the following video in Parent/Student Orientation. When Elder Eyring spoke of the prophecy, I teared up! It is so powerful! (in part of the video you see a short view of the inside of an auditorium--that is where we were for the orientation and where the students will have their weekly devotionals)
They will have a devotional each Tuesday, and at the first devotional Elder Utchdorf will speak! I am so excited for her and this new part of her journey! They also told us that because of church funding, each student automatically qualifies for a half tuition scholarship! He said ever since the school changed to BYU-I (from Ricks College), the number of students has tripled, but the cost per student has decreased! He said they have one of the lowest debt ratios for their students and one of the highest debt repayment ratios among their students. Pretty impressive!
