Each year the NCHEA (Nebraska Christian Home Educators Assoc.) hosts a conference around the first weekend in April. Each year they also have a special speaker and graduation ceremony as part of the conference weekend.
This year, Christopher Klicka was the guest speaker. I have heard this man's name ever since I started homeschooling. He has worked very successfully for the HSLDA (Homeschool Legal Defense Assoc.) for many years.
(The First Lady of Nebraska was there to officially make Christopher an Admiral in the Great Navy of the State ofNebraska. Did you know we had one??)
Anyhow, I was so excited to hear him speak. He told some great stories of Homeschool Heroes. True stories from families that he represented in court. Very interesting and inspiring. Also interesting to hear that Nebraska was one of the worst states for pursuing homeschoolers. (yes, it was not always legal. It wasn't until the early 1990's that homeschooling became legal in all 50 states!)
After his speech, he took a couple of minutes to address the graduates. This is in my own words as best as I can remember. I can't do justice to how well he did, but I really appreciated his message.
He spoke about being diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis . He said reading the scriptures is what keeps him going.
He quoted from the Bible, in Matthew: "Seek ye first the Kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you."
He told the graduates that they are at a time in their lives where they are going to be making many decisions about their future. He suggested that as they are making their choices, to make sure they "seek first the Kingdom of God".
Like, if they are thinking of marrying or finding a mate, then "seek first the Kingdom of God."
And as they ponder what job or career to pursue, to "seek first the Kingdom of God".
Wow. What a great idea! Now that is a graduation speech! I am saving that one for when my children graduate!
